Let's Go Outdoors! Interview with Michael Short
I had the pleasure to talk to Michael Short, a great man educating the public through Let's Go Outdoors, and discuss why fish identification is important to me. Check it out right here:
Manitoba Fish Species on the Fly
Exploring the Bow River: The Underwater World of Fish
It was a phone call from a friend that lead to "Shona, my fish friend, I need a booklet to feature fish ID. It is up to your imagination". Then a phone call to Joyce, we need illustrations and to Dave, I need a final reviewer. Then voila! We have this amazing book for the Calgary Fish and Game Association highlighting Joyce's daughter Abby on the front cover and her amazing artistry. Super happy how this project turned out and proud of my excellent team!
Contact the Calgary Fish and Game Association if you would like a copy as they obtained a grant from the Cabela's Canada Outdoor Fund to create it.

Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush)
Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC)
Canada’s future depends on the availability of clean water for drinking, food production, a strong economy and healthy wild spaces. This valuable resource is under threat.
TUC is the only national organization fighting to protect this resource, and working to physically restore Canada’s water for you. Like all Canadians, TUC is facing difficult times and we need your help.
Here is the link to provide all the fishy details:

Whirling Disease in Alberta!
Report Invasive Carp in Saskatchewan!
My name is Shayna and I am a Masters student at the University of Regina, and we are studying Aquatic Invasive Species in the province, particularly Prussian Carp (Carassius gibelio).
These carp are small, no larger than 15-16 inches, and have no barbels/whiskers in the corner of their mouth. They also have a terminal mouth (like a Yellow Perch) unlike our native suckers who have a subterminal mouth (White Sucker). Currently, Prussian Carp are in the South Saskatchewan River system from Alberta up to and past Saskatoon. They are rapidly spreading and we are determining their distribution through sampling and angler reports!
Because of Covid 19, our ability to do research based sampling is limited and delayed. This means we need the assistance of our anglers more than ever to provide an up-to-date report at the end of the season to allow our ministry to make the most informed decisions possible. I have attached the reporting information card and some photos below!
Please feel free to ask any questions as I love to talk about fish and fish research here in the province! I am also happy to help with any fish ID questions!

Are Prussian Carp outnumbering native minnow populations in the Red Deer River System?
I wanted to highlight a gifted High school student that reached out to talk about Prussian Carp. Everyone meet Ethan. He lives on a cattle ranch in Central Alberta. He is homeschooled & has a passion for wildlife biology.
